Beginner Level Furniture Carving – Heraldic Lion

Create a Heraldic Lion wall hanging using a straight chisel and parting tool. This is a fun filled exercise that is challenging as well as easy to accomplish.  The class will further develop your artistic skills and at the same time further develop your wood carving skills. Learn about different types of carving tools, discuss methods for sharpening and the proper techniques for safely handling , holding and using carving tools;  Learn to carve in forward and reverse directions; and learn how to deal with changing grain directions of wood.  This is a great learning experience for the artist and /or furniture maker who wants to learn to carve and start off by becoming correctly founded in the process of wood carving. For the woodworker who builds or wants to build high end furniture, this class and the four follow-on class series is a must. Carving can be applied to all styles of furniture ranging from Period, Victorian, Craftsman, Art Deco and Contemporary designs. This is an important fundamentals class...don't miss this opportunity!

 Carving a shell with convex rays.

Further develop your artistic skill and at the same time continue developing your wood carving skills. This is a fun filled exercise that is simple to accomplish with only a parting tool and straight chisel.  Impress your friends and fellow wood worker with your newly developed carving skills.  If you are a furniture maker and want to move up a notch and add ornamentation to your work, this course is tailor made for you.  Versions of this shell can be found on many different pieces of furniture from Period furniture, Victorian, Art Deco and  contemporary designs as well as in architectural designs.

Carving a shell with convex and concave rays
This carved shell is found on many Chippendale side chairs and other case pieces. This class will add another level of skill building and give the student more carving experience in a structured environment under the guidance of a master carver.  You will being exposed to a larger number of carving tools and learn various way to use them to produce this very sophisticated looking carving.  Carving this shell appears to be a very difficult task to accomplish...in fact it's simple once the student is taught how to properly layout and systematically carve the shell.

Carving a Convex Fan
Carving a convex fan is a fun filled exercise that introduces the beginner wood carver to a basic Queen Anne style carving found in historic buildings and high end furniture. A version of the carving taught in this class is found on most Queen Anne case pieces such as Chests, Lowboys and Highboys.  The fan is easy to carve with minimal tools. Once you take this class you can easily build your own beautiful Queen Anne  furniture with this carving on it.  This class is designed for those who simply want to learn to carve as well as for woodworkers who want to build high end furniture.  For furniture makers the above classes, this class and the follow-on  classes are a must. This carving can be applied to all styles of furniture ranging from 18th century American to contemporary designs.

 Queen Anne Style

Cabriole Chair Leg with a Shell on the knee and Pad Foot

Learning to shape and carve a cabriole leg is a necessary first step in learning to build high end chairs and case furniture that have cabriole style legs.  This class will teach you how to layout and  create a leg blank.  Knowing what to look for and training your artistic eye is a key part of carving a pleasing cabriole leg;  learn from a master furniture maker the secrets of  shaping a very pleasing cabriole leg.  Most of the early 18th century pieces had carved feet;  learn how to layout and carve the pad foot.  You will also learn how to apply and shape knee transition blocks.   See you in class!

Pie Crust Tray Circa 1720-1790
 

Carving this  Pie Crust Tray will be featured in the holiday issue of Woodcraft Magazine. This tray commonly was adorned on mantels and often used to serve tea  when entertaining during the colonial period.  Making this tray is easy to accomplish and is an exciting carving exercise that produces an item of great decoration that can be useful.  The carvings on this tray are very similar to the one on the classic tilt top 18th century Pie Crust Tables which makes this project a very important skill building exercise for the furniture maker who may want to build a larger Chippendale Pie Crust Tilt Top Tea Table.  Warning!  Do not take this class if your are not prepared to make several of these trays.... your wife, daughter, mother, etc. will have to have one.

Ribbon and Scroll Tray
Combined in tray form are motifs frequently used in 18th century American furniture carvings. Border ribbons ending in scrolls which overlap onto a shell at each end of the tray.  This is an exciting project that creates a very beautiful tray that can be used when entertaining and also serves as a decorative household item.  Warning!  Like the Pie Crust tray...be prepared to produce several of these trays.
This project is also a must carving project for the aspiring period furniture maker.

Sharpening Clinic

This sharpening clinic is a full day of "hands on" learning experiences where you sharpen a wide variety of carving tools. Some folks fail at carving or carve poorly because of the poor condition of their tools.  If you want to become an accomplished carver, work with master carver/furniture maker George Slack in a hand on session to learn the proper techniques for sharpening your carving tools. Unlock the mystery of having extremely sharp carving tools.  Learn to regrind damaged tools and modify tools to perform special carving functions.  During the class, various methods for sharpening will be discussed and demonstrated. Bring your carving tools to class with you....even bring your problem chisels that need special attention and take them home razor sharp.  Learn how to  quickly sharpen with minimal sharpening equipment.  Time is money in the carving and furniture making business.  The ability to correctly sharpen is a must have skill for hobbyist as well as professional cabinet makers. 

Tools required: be sure to bring your sharpening stones as well as items in serious need of sharpening.  If you have questions about needed sharpening equipment contact George Slack the class instructor.

Prerequisite:  Having completed Frank Cross's basic sharpening class taught at Woodcraft Suppy in Springfield, Virginia is helpful.
